by Sharon K. Turney If you look up "family" in a dictionary, Webster states: "a body of persons descended from a common ancestor" and also, "a group of rocks from the same mass". To describe our family, I would put us somewhere between a "body of persons" and "a rock group". All kidding aside, to describe our family, I have to look back to the Turney Family B.C. (Before Children). Don's Keyboard Studio was just getting off the ground, we had all the freedom in the world to take off at midnight for an ice cream run or stay out all night partying. But I honestly have to tell you...many nights we were bored to tears. A recurring conversation emerged..."What do you want to do tonight, sweetie?" "I don't know, what do you want to do?" "I asked you first" "I asked you second"...etc. Then, we decided to have a baby... Kayla Marie was born June 12th, 1994, two days before my 26th birthday. Life has not been the same since. She was a happy and fun baby, and very easy to deal with. She had a healthy fear of anything that could cause a "Boo-Boo", so she obeyed when we said "No." She walked one week before her first birthday, and could already match pitch at that age. Her language skills developed early, and at the age of three she could speak better than many five-year-olds.Then, we decide to have another one... On January 1st, 1998, Karissa Noel was added to our rock group, ahem, I mean, family. Kayla fell instantly in love with "her baby", and still considers herself a little mommy more than a sister. They adore each other and share many hugs and kisses (between the occasional fighting over toys). Kayla and Karissa are as different as night and day in many ways. Kayla has brown hair and eyes; Karissa blonde with bright blue eyes. And that "healthy fear" I told you Kayla always had? Not so with this one. One day when Karissa was 15 months old I found her standing on top of our glass coffee table, grinning from ear to ear. She doesn't show the musical ability Kayla did, but she loves to dance and beat on things. She'll be our percussionist. Despite their differences, both of our girls are beautiful to look at, with personalities to match. Although they try our patience at times, there are always plenty of hugs and kisses being passed around. So as I sit here during the only quiet moments since 6:30 this morning, looking around at the toys strewn on the floor and hearing the girls' peaceful breathing in the next room, I let out a happy sigh, knowing we'll never be bored again.... |
